The Last Post Antiphonal:
My concept of this creation is that many brass bands do play at Remembrance Day services, in, or outdoors.
The tradition is one solo trumpet/cornet plays The Last Post (often in the distance/hidden/lontano) giving the singular/solo of one, the last one. The perfect scenario I think.
It’s not for the faint hearted to perform even though you can’t press any wrong vales down having done it more than 30/40 times myself including at the grave side of the man who played it first in the Albert Hall after WWII, and at the funeral of a young lady who won a medal for playing the Last Post with 60+ brass players attending.
So this part of the concept is all the cornets in the band get a chance to perform it, but obviously, not at once at the same time hence the next concept; to make it antiphonal as if from all parts of a massive cathedral where echo’s cross each other and thus creating an echo in the writing.
And yes, some unusual harmony choices but this is to reflect and create a mood for this moment.
