This piece was written at the time of the American Civil War in about 1861, and was originally based on the melody ‘John’s Brown’s Body’, but more religious overtones were added when Julia Ward Howe wrote the well-known lyrics to the song as it is sung today. The original music was composed by William Steffe. This brass band arrangement of Peter Willhousky’s original arrangement was commissioned by ‘Classics Galore!’ in 2011 and was originally performed by full orchestra, brass band and choral society.
