Wilfred Heaton composed his Variations on Annie Laurie in 1938 for cornet and piano. He was an admirer of the music of Erik Leidzen and the influence of the Swedish-American composer can be detected in the easy flow of the music. Heaton subsequently made three versions of the work with brass band accompaniment.
After a dramatic opening, the music takes the soloist on a white-knuckle ride of virtuosity in three contrasting variations.
